What is architectural lighting?

Architectural lighting is the planned design and construction of light that is an integral part of architecture, not just a functional means of lighting. Its purpose is to emphasize form, materials and spatial relationships, but also to ensure functionality. Using different layers and directions of light creates an atmosphere and directs the experience of space. Such lighting allows the architecture to be equally legible and expressive during the day and at night.

We can say that architectural lighting has three main roles: functional (provides enough light for movement and safety), spatial (visually reduces or increases space, directs people's gaze and movement, connects zones in space) and aesthetic (accentuates shapes, textures and materials, and creates atmosphere).
